1. 停留原地,不做任何事情:


– She put the food in the microwave and waited.
她把食物放进微波炉里,然后等待。
– The postman rang the bell, and then he waited.
邮递员按了门铃,然后他等候。
– Wait in this room, the boss will come in five minutes.
在这个房间等待,老板会在五分钟内过来。


2. 推迟做某事直到有人/某事到来或某事发生:


– Wait until the light turns green.
等待灯变绿。
– We have to wait with this work; it’s raining too hard.
我们必须等待这项工作;雨下得太大了。

Wait (for) a certain period of time:
等待(等候)一段时间:

– They’ve been waiting (for) two hours.
他们已经等待了两个小时。
Wait for somebody/something:
等待某人/某事:
– We’ll be waiting for you at the station.
我们会在车站等候你。
– How long have you been waiting for the manager?
你等经理等了多久?


Wait (for somebody/something) to do something:
等待某人/某事做某事:

– We’re waiting for the rain to stop before we go out.
我们正在等雨停了再出去。
– Hurry up! We‘re waiting to go.
快点!我们正在等待出发。


Wait in – stay at home (in the office, etc.), because you are expecting somebody to come, telephone, etc.:
等候在家(办公室等地),因为你期待有人来电、来访等:

– We waited in all the afternoon but the guests didn’t arrive.
我们整个下午都在等候,但客人没到。
– Shall I wait in after work if the decorators can’t finish in time?
如果装修工人不能按时完成,下班后我要在家等候吗?

Wait on something/somebody (informal, especially American English) – wait for something to happen before you do or decide something:
等待某事/某人(非正式,尤其是美式英语)

– I’m waiting on the result of a blood test.
我正在等候血液检查结果。
– Wait on the final exams before you start looking for a job.
在你开始找工作之前等待期末考试的结果。


Wait on somebody – serve somebody, act as a servant to somebody, especially by serving food to them:
为某人提供服务,尤其是通过为他们提供食物来充当仆人:

– She waited on customers all day at the department store.
她整天在百货公司为顾客提供服务。
– Help yourself, I’m too tired to wait on you.
请随便取用,我太累了,无法为你提供服务。
– My husband just sits there in front of the TV and expects me to wait on him.
我丈夫就坐在电视机前,期待我为他服务。
